Frequently Asked Questions
What is life coaching?
Life coaching is the art and practice of enabling individuals and groups to move from where they are to where they want to be.
The International Coach Federation has a definition for personal and professional coaching that is widely accepted:
“… coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential, which is particularly important in today’s uncertain and complex environment. Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and whole. Standing on this foundation, the coach’s responsibility is to:
- Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve
- Encourage client self-discovery
- Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies
- Hold the client responsible and accountable
This process helps clients dramatically improve their outlook on work and life, while improving their leadership skills and unlocking their potential.”
How does coaching differ from counseling?
The biggest difference is coaching is about growing. Counseling is about healing.
Coaching is not reactive looking back. It is proactive looking ahead.
Counseling helps people deal with issues such as depression, anxiety, addiction, and conflicts with others and working through painful influences from the past.
Coaching is for relatively well-adjusted people looking to build vision and move forward with the future.
Coaching focuses less on overcoming weaknesses and more on building skills and strengths.
What do coaches do to help others?
Coaches stimulate better skills. Good coaching helps people anticipate what they could become, overcome self-defeating habits or insecurities, manage relationships, develop new competencies, and build effective ways of improving.
Coaches stimulate vision. Many individuals have no clear vision. They keep doing what they have done for years, without much change and with little expectation that things will ever be different.
Coaches speak the truth in love. Good coaches know that sometimes the best way to help is by refusing to ignore harmful behavior patterns. Coaches nudge people to deal with attitudes and behaviors that should be faced and changed.
How is coaching facilitated?
Individual coaching is facilitated via telephone. Growing research in both the fields of coaching and counseling shows given people’s hectic schedules, they prefer having the freedom to conduct sessions over the phone versus driving to an office. People find it much more convenient and comfortable to have their sessions at home.
